Men hvis vi skal unngå klimakatastrofe og samfunnsmessig kollaps, må vi ta farvel med kapitalismen som grunnlag for samfunnet, mener Ulrike Herrmann, en av Tysklands mest innflytelsesrike økonomiske tenkere.
Hun er kritisk til tanken om «grønn vekst» innen kapitalistiske rammer, og tviler på at teknologiske fremskritt kan løse klimakrisen. Men hvis den kapitalistiske økonomien ikke er rigget for å håndtere klimakrisen — hvilke løsninger og hvilket økonomisk system kan gjøre det? Hvordan skape en ny, global og grønn økonomi, uten å sette det liberale demokratiet på spill?

“It is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism,” philosopher Slavoj Žižek once remarked. But if we are to avoid climate catastrophe and societal collapse, we must say farewell to capitalism as the foundation of our societies, argues Ulrike Herrmann, one of Germany’s most influential economic thinkers. Herrmann is deeply critical of the idea of “green growth” within capitalist frameworks, and she questions whether technological progress alone can solve the climate crisis. If the capitalist economy is not equipped to handle the climate emergency, then what kind of solutions and what kind of economic system might be? How can we build a new, global green economy without jeopardizing liberal democracy?
